Now this is not only true in regard to character, but the same prin-

ciple applies also to health. The physical plane is the plane of outward effects, in which causes, whether physical, emotional, mental or spiritual, work themselves out; and no ‘cause,’ that is, no force which has been set in motion, on any plane, can fail to produce its effect sooner or later on the physical plane. But it may be held in suspension, either for a shorter or longer period.

The true cause of ill-health, disease or constitutional infirmity, is disharmony, i.¢e., some infraction of nature’s laws (or God’s laws in other words), on some plane or other, either in this or a previous life, which the universal Spirit of Harmony seeks to adjust by getting rid of the discordant element. This can only be got rid of by being thrown downward and outward, by being ‘precipitated,’ as the chemist would say, into the physical plane and thus filtered out of the nature—for the true seat of disease is in the mind.

Now this process may be brought about gradually and almost imperceptibly, or it may be hastened considerably, or it may be brought about almost instantaneously. Usually, the former is the case, and ill-health manifests itself slowly ; where much activity of mind or soul is displayed the process is expedited, as we see in the cases of those with a predisposition to consumption. But in some cases, as is well known to those who are familiar with many who have had a spiritual quickening, the turning of the inner nature steadfastly and irrevocably towards harmony and truth, throws all the discord and disharmony of the nature outwards and downwards, first into the mind, then the emotions, and, as a last resort, on to the physical plane in the form of bodily disease. And thus that particular sickness of the soul is got rid of for ever.

It does nor . low, of course, that any such crisis of intellectual, moral or spiritual quickening will necessarily be followed by physical disease. That will depend upon (a) the available inner discord to be externalised, (4) the soul-force which expels it and the suddenness with which it is thrown iu:to action, and (c) the readiness of response, or elasticity, of the body; also, of course, in a very great measure upon the hygienic conditions to which that body is subjected. ‘Nor is it essential that the expulsive force spoken of need be of a very high spiritual order, for the same principle holds good where the influx is. merely one of physical vigour; in short the whole question is merely one of grdna or the life-energy, whatever be the plane of manifestation

upon which it is first called into being. Where the revulsion is sudden and violent, the physical body is not always able to endure the strain and death results ; but such cases are, as may be supposed, rare.

The truth of this principle is well-known in all Natural Cure institutions, where the first symptoms of the commencement of the cure is that the patient /ee/s much worse—the latent poison in the system has been stirred into activity, and is on its way to expulsion through the shiz (Cardinal Signs, physical world), usually resulting in a rash technically known in hydropathic establishments as the ‘crisis.’

Now the bearing of all this upon the reading of a nativity will not need very much further elucidation. Suppose we have Jupiter on cusp of ascendant and Saturn on cusp of fourth; this is a mundane square and indicates misfortune and repressive circumstances. But suppose at the same time these planets are in zodiacal sextile, as in the horoscope on p. 68 of Modern Astrology (Vol. IIl., New Series)? This we should judge as indicating that the objective and subjective minds were in good accord, indicating a well-balanced and well-disposed nature, truthful, reliable, and trustworthy ; the native himself says, ‘it has always seemed to me to denote that my character is better than my circumstances,’ and by the strength of his character he has overcome the adverse circumstances. Suppose it had been the other way about, mundane sextile and zodiacal square, then the circumstances would have been good and the character different, and the result would have been precisely the reverse, in all probability ; the character, very weak and shiftless, would have wasted excellent opportunities and squandered wealth.

In this way it can be seen how the /ouses are always (or at least as a rule) negative, in a sense, as compared with the szgms, the latter representing the ‘life’ poured into the ‘form’ signified by the houses. Suppose, then, in this last illustration, the soul of the native in some way received a great quickening so that the inner weaknesses were cast off by the awakeni.uy spirit, then the discord indicated by the zodiacal square would be as it were suddenly precipitated, and the disasters and misfortunes (in a worldly sense) which so often follow in the train of a spiritual awakening would very soon make their appearance; had the planets ruled or been in houses specially concerned with health, this would probably result in some disease of the stomach (fourth house).

The circle of the houses and the circle of the signs mark progressive limitations, and also progressive powers. As the attempt is made to

transcend the one the forces of the other at once flow in, and should this attempt be made too suddenly, or should fixed habits and conventional states of mind prove too inelastic, disharmony and henceillness or. disease will result. Butin the history of the Soul they might be written down as *‘ growing pains.’

The above is the horoscope of a female born at 2.42 a.m. 13th December, 1835, London. The Moon in this nativity is hyleg and afflicted by square © and 6, Z kh. The Sun is also afflicted by conjunction with Mars.

The native died 17th November, 1855, under the following ‘Directions’:—Ascendant Z 6, bringing into action ) 0 ¢ at birth; Mars at the time of death was transiting the place of the Moon at birth. The Moon by secondary direction was applying to the opposition of the Sun and Mars, and was therefore in square to its own place at birth. The Sun had also arrived at the opposition of Jupiter’s progressed place and Venus ruler of the first and eighth was in square to Saturn Jord of the fourth. In this case death had been predicted, the astrologer finding it inevitable. }
