Tue First House has a very decided influence over the physical body as a whole, governing what we may term the general temperament. The Second House has also a decided influence in this respect, having considerable sway over the emotional and desire nature. The Third House in the same way has a definite influence over the mind; these three houses analogically coming under the dominant rulership of the three planets Mars, Venus and Mercury respectively.

In the Tutrp Houses, which we are now to consider, we study all that relates to movement, transition, and change. It is also related to the seventh house, as previously shown, and thus governs relatives and kindred; but, generally speaking, it rules all affairs that seriously affect the mind, and the mental tendencies. _

The planets occupying the third house will first be considered, the customary order being adopted.

NEPTUNE in the third house, imaginative, fanciful, and weird mental tendencies; fondness for spiritualistic phenomena and matters pertaining to the occult and mystical side of things; poetical fancies; dreamy state of mind.

Only a few can respond to the higher vibrations of the planet Neptune ; but those who have any tendency to allow their nature to become depraved and degraded seem to come under an influence from this planet which appears to be the inversion of a very high moral grade. In a great number of cases already investigated, and afflicted Neptune in the third appears to denote imbecility or weak intellect, depraved tastes, and morbid fancies. Troubles of a peculiar nature appear to affect the relations, and troubles on journeys are very probable.

Up to the present the influence of Neptune does not usually appear

to be favourable, and until the work of tabulation with regard to this

planet is complete, no definite statement can be made with regard to its influence.

Uranus in the third house denotes an inventive, ingenious, and curious mind; given to study mystical and metaphysical subjects ; unconventional and very liberal mental tendencies ; fond of abstruse and profound studies. In a weak horoscope this position denotes bohemian tastes, wild and erratic scherues and projects formulated by the brain, and unaccountable and strange mental attitudes. In a progressive horoscope it widens the mental vision and broadens the intellectual view of life. In the advanced types of humanity it raises the mind into higher thought and prepares the way for altruistic ideas, and social or mental reforms. To all it gives a touch of the eccentric or a flash of genius, especially in music or oratory, with, in the latter, a distinctly epigrammatic tendency. It gives a love of Astrology and kindred subjects, power to hypnotise, heal and use the mesmeric forces for the benefit of others. It denotes the possibility of awakening clairaudient or clairvoyant faculties, and tends to make the native a distinct and unique character, especially in mental expression.

This position denotes some strange experiences with or through relatives ; sudden and unexpected journeys; travels for adventure and new discoveries.

When in aspect with Neptune, especially if afflicted, these tendencies are accentuated.

SATURN in the third house indicates a despondent, slow and laborious mind ; plodding, careful, cautious and fearful. It favours secrecy, and mental pursuits where tact and patience are required, but much depends upon the nativity as to how Saturn in the third house will affect the mind. In a poor horoscope it will tend to make the native deceitful, cunning and over-acquisitive, and if badly aspected will show as follows, according to the afflicting planet: 2%, hypocrisy and treachery; 6, unreliable and prone to give way to violent fits of passion; ¢, depraved tastes and lack of refinement; §, thievish and dishonest tendencies ; © or ), a weak intellect, inclined to fret, pine, and become very discontented.

This position gives a liability to melancholia, insanity and morbid tendencies. It is an unfavourable position for dealings with relatives, and often brings much sorrow through them. It is not good for travel and denotes loss, delay and disappointment in connection with journeys,

also many unprofitable changes—unless very well aspected, when responsibility and a strong sense of duty are shown.

JUPITER in the third house shows a religious and philosopnical mind, kind and sympathetic mentally, with abilities above the average; sincere and courteous in speech and writing; earnest, thoughtful and considerate in all matters of correspondence and exchange of thought. This position favours those who are naturally social and readily able to adapt themselves to all average conventional requirements. It denotes a hopeful, cheerful and contented mind, but gives no striking mental ability unless in good aspect with the Sun, Moon or Mercury, but even if no planets are in favourable aspect it is especially good for the mental! faculties. ,

This position promises much gain, and many benefits through and from relatives; also prosperous and fruitful journeys, and generally financial success through travelling.

The position of Jupiter in the third in Fzery Signs is good for sociai success; Larthy Signs, good for business, commerce, and speculative enterprise; Azry Signs, good for the mind and mental pursuits ; Watery Signs, good for voyages and travel by water. But it is unfavourable for all things if afflicted by the planet Mars.

Mars in the third house denotes a turbulent and forceful mind, the native being usually over-energetic and impulsive mentally, possessing a keen, alert and sharp lower mind, but apt to lack control and balance. The only aspects that moderate and temper the influence of Mars ‘in this house are those of a favourable nature from Saturn or Mercury, and under some conditions those coming from Uranus, when great mental energy and keen inventive genius are denoted.

The afflictions of the various planets to Mars in the third house are very critical, especially afflictions from Uranus, which has a certain violent tendency. All persons with Mars in the third are liable at some period of their lives to a touch of brain-fever, or some over-balancing of the mental faculties—unless this planet is placed in the sign Capricorn, the only sign in which the fury and impulse of Mars are lessened and brought more under control.

Many troubles through relatives are denoted by this position, and dangers through travel and unfortunate journeys are very marked if the planet Mars is afflicted. The turbulent tendencies of Mars in the third are modified considerably when a negative or passive sign rises at birth,

Tue Sun in the third house bestows magnanimity of mind, with some pride, and ambitious tendencies. Firm and self-reliant in all mental pursuits, always aiming at success, seeking honour and fame through mental qualifications, and ever desirous of benefiting others mentally. }

When in good aspect to Ii, inventive, constructive, and reformative mental tendencies; h, the mind is profound and authoritative, commanding respect and obedience; ¥%, religious or philosophical, very kind and considerate; ¢, militant, and at times aggressive.

This position gives success in travel, and in dealing with relatives, by whom the native is respected and sometimes feared.

If the Sun is much afflicted in the third house it denotes great pride and arrogance, and a domineering and over-ambitious mind, causing trouble and sorrow to others, according to the sign upon the cusp of the third house and the sign in which the Sun is placed.

If the native is born under any of the positive signs it is more fortunate. The Moon in good aspect with the Sun promises important beneficial changes every seven years of the life.

Venus in the third house is very favourable, giving much love of art and refined literature, poetry, music, painting and all the higher attributes of the mind and mental faculties. The mental qualifications are of the highest, making the mind bright, hopeful, peaceful and harmonious. When Venus is in good aspect to the Moon or in conjunction with Mercury this position considerably modifies an otherwise adverse horoscope, for the mind is naturally inclined to be pure and free from vice or evilintent. When afflicted the mind is over-sensuous and inclined too much to pleasure and gay society, but not wholly unfortunate unless Mercury and the Moon are also in adverse aspect.
