THE twelfth house is generally supposed to be the house of sorrow, enemies, imprisonment and misfortune. This is probably owing to its being one of the houses belonging to the psychic trinity; and, as the cadent houses of that triangle, it is the least fortunate of the three.

Before concluding our consideration of the twelve houses it will be as well if we analyse the value of the cardinal, succedent, and cadent houses. By doing so we shall obtain a clearer understanding as to why the twelfth house should be thought so very unfortunate.

The Cardinal houses or ‘Angles’ represent the physical body, and all that is expressed by action in the outer or external world; they are quick, acute, active, energetic, open. They concern the head chiefly.

The Succedent houses are less physical and material in their nature, being more in sympathy with the feelings and emotions. They govern principally the trunk of the body, and the heart is thus affected more than any other part. These succedent houses are not as plainly expressed in the outer or physical world as are the cardinal houses, but they are more closely related to the inner strength of the character.

The Cadent houses are the least expressed of any signs; they govern the mind and thought more than emotion or action, and are more closely related to the /imbs of the body than the other signs.

In the mutable signs we may trace the birth of thought and intellectual conceptions apart from worldly knowledge or practice; therefore all influences connected with the mutable signs are, more or less, latent. The third, sixth, ninth and twelfth signs in the order of the signs are common or mutable signs and in the order of the twelve houses are the ‘cadent’ houses; these are ‘unfortunate,’ owing to their latency or lack of practical external expression. 4

In Natal Astrology, influences coming from these cadent houses are often accompanied by lack of opportunity and inability to bring practical worldly success or reward, no matter how great the merit or skill, I¢

other words, they lack power. In the succedent houses and signs there is more power, but it is sometimes silent power awaiting favourable expression; while in the cardinal signs and houses whatever power or merit there is in the native is expressed. Now in common with the other houses, the twelfth house may be either fortunate or unfortunate, but only with regard to that which the house denotes. But, for the reasons stated, when afflicted it is most unfortunate.

The fourth house denotes psychic power, which will become occultism, ‘white’ or ‘black’ according to the status or development of the native psychically or spiritually. The eighth house is related to the astral world, in which psychic feeling is intensified after the death of the physical body. ‘The twelfth house is related to the psychic mind, in which receptivity or mental sensitiveness to the unseen worlds is awakened ; therefore it is known as the house of self-undoing, which in some cases may mean the breaking up of the concrete physical condition by a leaning toward the occult side of things. The twelfth house, then, may denote sorrow in matters of an external or purely physical type; trouble and difficulty in matters of an emotional character; — annoyance, worry and anxiety in matters intellectual or mental—but in this relation it may also bring joy and peace. It is the house of the voluntary recluse as well as of the pauper, the invalid and the prisoner. It is also the house of enemies, or may show the native to be his own worst enemy.* It is the most mysterious of all the twelve houses.

NEPTUNE in the twelfth house exerts an influence which is very difficult to foresee when good, or to guard against when evil. When afflicted, the native is in danger of all sorts of secret enmity, underhand conduct from others, and treachery. When well aspected he benefits through affairs that are kept secret, and through matters that even his friends do not suspect; its influence is then good for all secret concerns and occupations, detective work. private agencies, etc., as well as for occultism. This is not altogether a bad position for Neptune, being related to the sign Pisces, with which this planet has much sympathy.

Uranus in the twelfth house is unfavourable for all except those who are inclined to act from occult or from psychic motives, in which case it favours mysterious, romantic, and out-of-the-common actions. For those who have unfortunate horoscopes it is evil, denoting confine-

ment in hospitals or public institutions, etc., and threatening somewhat similar dangers to those indicated by Saturn in this house. If much afflicted there may be trouble or danger from psychic sources, and the native may lose money or reputation, or both, if he follows a Uranian eccupation. He should be very careful as to his methods of investigating psychic matters.

SATURN in the twelfth house denotes one who is very reserved and fond of solitude, with strong inclinations to become a recluse. It is an unfavourable position for all save those who love to work in secret and live by themselves. If much afflicted the native easily makes enemies, and may suffer imprisonment or enforced confinement at some period of his life. If afflicted by:

dg Danger of suicide or other tragic end.

© or ) Sorrow through death of loved ones, and a tendency to despond and suffer from melancholia. % Danger of hypochondria or mental delusions.

The good aspects in this position give acquisitiveness and a love of secretly hoarding money.

JUPITER in the twelfth house denotes success in occult studies, and a respect for the sacred and ancient beliefs. It also gives success ina quiet and mysterious manner of which the general public are unaware. It enables the native to gain either directly or indirectly through his enemies, or to turn them into friends, even against their will. This position gives dual love affairs; or some peculiar experience in connection with the affections which is evidently beneficial to the native. It will bring success toward the middle or latter portion of the native’s life, and tends to bring him secret aid and help from good friends, even when afflicted. It makes him charitable and philanthrophic and willing to help others. It is good for physicians, clergy, officers of public institutions, hospitals, etc. The native is benefited through the philanthropy of others and by public institutions. It is unfavourable when Jupiter is in Scorpio or Virgo.

Mars in the twelfth house denotes strange and unfortunate adventures, in which grave dangers to the native are to be apprehended if he is shown to act more from impulse than reason; to decide this the position and aspects of Mercury must be studied. The native is liable to false imprisonment, treachery through misplaced affection, and

injuries from enemies. In some cases this position denotes poverty, or a difficulty to make headway, especially if Mars is placed in Libra or Pisces. Those having this position would do well to avoid spiritualistic seances, mediumship, etc., for there may be danger of obsession. If afflicted by:

The good aspects of the Sun and Venus improve this position; but it is more unfortunate than favourable, unless Mars rules the fourth, in which case the native may create his own dignity.

Tue Sun in the twelfth house denotes that one-third, if not more, of the native’s life will be unfortunate and liable to obscurity; but from misfortune and sorrow he will rise to success, principally by his own efforts. He will have strong leanings towards the occult and psychic side of life, will be estranged from his parents, and will be one apart from his family. If the Sun is afflicted by Mars, Saturn or Uranus, the whole life will be one of sorrow and affliction, but if well aspected by Jupiter or Saturn the native will be capable of much self-sacrifice and endurance. Care must be taken to note the sign the Sun occupies; if in a watery sign the mediumistic tendencies are accentuated. Sorrow through things indicated by the sign generally comes to the native.
