With reference to these ‘Polarities,’ the value of the Sun in each sign as denoting the Individual Characteristics, and similarly also that of the Moon in each sign as relating to the Personal Idiosyncrasies, and the combinations resulting therefrom have each been very fully dealt with in the third revised edition of the first volume of this series, Astrology for All, hence it is unnecessary to repeat what has there been said, and it will therefore suffice to give the following briet summary of

THE DISPOSITION PRODUCED BY THE MOON IN PLANETARY SIGNS

In the Sun's Sign (S).—Honour, self-confidence, self-reliance, dignity, pride, ambition, love of fame, candour, generosity, nobility of

nature, organising ability, tendency to pomp and ceremony. Evil aspects may not lessen these qualities necessarily, but they are a little apt to turn dignity and pride into conceit, vanity or ostentation.

In the Moon's Sign (95).—The best side of the Moon’s nature shows out here. Sociability, domesticity, family and parental love, attraction to the mother, accessibility, fellow-feeling, agreeableness, humanity, popularity, love of change. ‘The feelings and emotions are active, and usually for good. Bad aspects may not do more than bring ill luck through this side of the nature.

In Mercury's Signs (11 and 1).—An open and receptive mind, readiness to respond to new ideas and take up new subjects, a fertile fancy, great love of change, and fondness for travel, with a taste for investigating many subjects. Strengthens the mind and enlivens the intellect, in any direction indicated by the horoscope. There is ability to learn, memorise, write, speak, acquire education, etc.

In the Signs of Venus (% and =).—Good-humoured, warm-hearted ; fond of company, society and amusement; affable, popular, hopeful, mirthful; inclined to friendship, love and marriage. Appreciation of music, painting, the fine arts, ornamentation, dress, luxury. Mental refinement, unless badly afflicted. In Taurus, a tendency to live too much in the feelings, sometimes indulging a morbid approbativeness or jealousy ; in Libra sometimes a too complacent nature.

In the Signs of Mars (' and M).—Courage, a positive and forceful nature, enterprise, independence, dislike of control, self-reliance, action, activity, energy, practical ability, will, determination, masterfulness. If there is much affliction by Mars or Saturn, there may be manifested rashness, imprudence, impulsiveness, anger, aggressiveness, rebellion, recklessness, hastiness, pride, intolerance, obstinacy.

In the Signs of Jupiter (f and ).—Good-natured, jovial, social, benevolent, kind, humanitarian, philanthropic, charitable; hopefulness, devotion. faithfulness, openness of mind, inclination to religion or philosophy, imagination, love of beauty and harmony. In Sagittarius, often somewhat careless, ready in promise or boast but indifferent in performance; in Pisces, sometimes too negative, responding to diseased physical or mental conditions by preference, as it were.

In the Signs of Saturn (V8 and <).—Gravity, thoughtfulness, steadfastness, patience, self-control, restraint. A self-contained nature, farseeing, displaying sobriety of conduct with worldly wisdom ; inclination

for practical affairs, such as business, politics, etc.; reserve, dignity, ambition, strength of will. Under affliction some of the less favourable qualities may be traced: gloom, despondency, selfishness, hardness, want of hopefulness, lack of enterprise, worldliness, covetousness, coldness of nature, lack of humanity, lack of candour. In Capricorn a tendency to capricious acts. In Aquarius, often a fickle manner, strange tastes, andsome aloofness of mind: in either case a subtle and penetrative mind.

©) and}. When these are in good aspect, and especially when in conjunction, the individual and personal sides of the nature form a harmonious blend, and the result is decidedly good. It is also good if both are in signs governed by the same planet, or if the lord of the sign containing one is exalted in that containing the other. If either or both are in good aspect to the cusp of the ascendant or to its lord or toa planet in the ascendant, the harmony of the character is considerably increased; and actions, intellect, and feelings will be more in accord than is the case with the average person of to-day.

Aspects to planets, however, must be taken into account to some extent before pronouncing too confident an opinion ; for even if the two luminaries are in good aspect to each other, one may be heavily afflicted by planets and the other not; the side of the nature indicated by the planet afflicted will then be much less fortunate than the other. This consideration it is important to bear constantly in mind.

When in conjunction or good aspect, the general strength of character is increased, there is some amount of self-reliance, personal independence, and stability. It promotes usefulness in the home and the world, increases the activity and the will. It is good for all social, benevolent, and utilitarian movements, broadens the sympathies, gives humanitarian impulses, and conduces to popularity and general success. The constitution is strengthened and vitality increased somewhat. There is a likelihood of offspring and of good fortune through them in respect of health, disposition and circumstances. It tends to increase family harmony both in youth and age; is good for parents and children; and

favours love, marriage and friendship. It includes the possibility of money and success through a variety of sources, through parents or children, but also and chiefly through occupations or sources indicated by the sign containing the Sun (except when the Moon is the more elevated or the stronger of the two). If both are in one sign, the ruler of that sign will be very important in the character and fortunes; generally for good, unless contradicted elsewhere.

When in bad aspect, more especially in square-—for the opposition merely throws the lunar qualities into special prominence—there will be disharmony manifested between the individual and personal characteristics; the one will run counter to the other. Which will prove victor, and whether it will result in a more, or a less, estimable disposition may be judged from the relative power of the luminaries; (1) by mundane position, (2) by zodiacal position, congenial or otherwise, or (3) by the planetary aspects and the power of the planets concerned, whether by position, sign or inherent nature.

The correct judgment of the polarity, in this sense, of the horoscope is really the key to the reading of the whole nativity, and the best powers of the student should be concentrated upon it; for it is a subtle and complex problem. #
