Tue fourth house relates to the ‘grave,’ the end of life, one of the parents—usually the father, according to Western astrologers, though the Hindus say the mother, since the fourth house corresponds to Cancer—and denotes also the environment, residence and family conditions in which the native dwells.A few words may not be out of place here in regard to both the fourth and tenth houses, regarded from a more or less metaphysical point of view. The fourth house may be briefly summarised as the personal environment, the tenth house as the individual environment. Passing in review a moment the four angles of the figure and _ their corresponding signs T, 95, ==, V4, we can see very well how this is. Firstly, the oriental half of the map, fourth to tenth (reckoned backwards) indicates, as has been said in an earlier chapter, the objective side of existence, of which the ascendant, representing the personal man or woman, is the most obvious and sharply focussed expression. The occidental portion of the map, tenth to fourth, on the other hand, represents the subjective side of the nature, which finds its external concrete expression in the partners, domestic and business, to which the native is drawn. In the same way, therefore, that the fourth house represents in a general sense the centre or focus of the personal or domestic environment, the tenth house represents the focus of the zndividual or business. environment.Looked at in this way, a horoscope becomes exceedingly interesting when we study it from the standpoint of business or marriage. A certain. humorist has hinted that ‘marriage is woman’s business,’ but without any cynicism, real or assumed, we can see that viewed in this light there is a certain basis for the suggestion. A young man’s start in life is. reckoned from the time when he first sets out in business (tenth house,business, honours, ideals, ambition); and similarly a young woman’s. 164 \start in life dates from marriage, when she removes to the house provided by her husband (10th house, fourth from the seventh, ze., the husband’s domestic environment). The veal factor in both cases is the same, the personal or outer self (first house), usually domiciled in the fourth, is removed thence and commences to take up its abode in the tenth, the domicile of the individuality or alter ego, the (relatively) higher self, the ‘better half.’

Of the angles, the first house governs our personal self, and its opposite the seventh house, rules the one who is nearest and dearest to us, namely, the marriage partner. The fourth house determinesconditions in our home and its opposite angle, the tenth house, shows our social standing in the community where we live. Thus the angles show collectively the sphere of our activities in life.Of the succeedent houses the second shows our financial status with regard to that which we acquire by our own efforts and the opposite succeedent house, the eighth, shows whatever we may receive from others as legacies, etc. The other succeedent houses, the fifth and eleventh, show how our income may be spent, for the fifth house indicates the children of our body who have a legitimate claim to a share of our income, and the eleventh house shows the children of our brain, our hopes, wishes and aspirations which also draw upon our resources.Of the two pairs of cadent houses the sixth is the house of voluntary service which we perform as our share of the world's work for an equivalent share in the world's wealth, and the twelfth house shows how we may be compelled to labor without remuneration under prison restraint if we do not work willingly. The sixth house shows also the state of our health and the twelfth tells if hospital treatment is necessary.The other pair of cadent houses, the third and ninth, show whether our life and work will confine us to one place or require travel and changes of residence. In this respect the third house shows short journeys and the ninth house long travels.

This is a very good combination, belonging to the fiery triplicity, but it gives much restlessness, great inclination to go to extremes, especially in religious matters, or matters of the heart. The Moo/i is in the fourth house from the Solar Centre, therefore in perfect harmony with it. There is a great love of pleasure, much hope and joy in the nature, this being a hopeful and successful combination.This tends to harden the interior nature, giving much ambition and exactitude. The personality is inclined to be rather grasping, selfish, and too practical externally, but inside the heart is always pulling away from externals. This being the fifth house from the Sun the circulation is apt to suffer. It gives great love of power and leadership, and ^ability to organise, govern and rule others. The ambitions are very keen and determined.This combination is equal to the Moon being in opposition to the Sun. It acts as a seventh house influence, causing the personality to go out to many indiscriminately ; it gives intuition and ability to judge human nature quickly, and some very marked occult tendencies. It gives refinement and much determination and will-power.
