Chapter X. The Third House--Brethren AND RELATIVES, SHORT JOURNEYS,（续 1）

It is a position very favourable for travel and gives many journeys taken for pleasure, or those out of which pleasure eventually comes. It denotes favourable relatives, and success or gain through their aid.

Persons born under positive signs are favoured mentally by this position, and those born under negative sigus gain more through the feelings and emotions; therefore the former may have literary and poetical ability and the latter musical talent and ability to draw or paint.

Mercury in the third house indicates one fond of learning, studious,

and generally mirthful, alert, and active mentally. [Eager to investigate

science, or any new thought, fond of reading, literature and all things that enlighten and tend to expand the understanding. This house is wholly mental, being (analogically) the positive station of Mercury: it therefore gives a love of writing and speaking, and tends to quicken all expressions of the mind in every form. The following are the indications when we find Mercury in good aspect to: ‘’, humorous, dreamy, poetical and mystical in thought; HI, intuition and a love of advanced thought; h, profound and deep thought; 4%, judgment and reason is denoted; ¢, mechanical or mathematical skill.

If Mercury is afflicted the mind is wayward and prone to worry and fret. If afflicted by: *#, vague or morbid fancies and impracticable schemes; HI, precipitate and ‘ wrong-headed,’ or cantankerous; h, much melancholy is denoted; 2%, danger of hypocrisy and deceit; ¢, untruthfulness or exaggeration.

Much will depend upon the sign on the third as to how the affliction of Mercury will affect the mind, for in some cases this affliction denotes reform and eccentricity though with good motives; but generally it is a very unfortunate affliction, giving some liability to insanity.

Mercury in the third-house denotes gain by travel through the expansion of the mind, if well aspected. It also denotes much thought or anxiety concerning the affairs of relatives.

THE Moon in the third house shows native to be changeable and inconsistent in mental pursuits; very curious and inquisitive; fond of enquiring into all kinds of knowledge, ever possessing a fund of information and superficial learning, but lacking in continuity and stability. Fond of publicity, and eager to know all that is going on under any conditions. Much depends upon the aspects of the Moon from the third house to the various planets as to whether the above will be modified or accentuated.

, The Moon in good aspect with: , adds a touch of genius, or insanity, according to sign and aspects to other planets; HI, increases the love of the romantic and awakens the imaginative faculties, tending to quicken thought and lead the mind into original study; h, steadies and adds firmness and prudence to the mental qualifications; ¥Y, adds to the social inclinations and gives donhomie,; 6, quickens the love of enterprise and adventure; ©, strengthens continuity and the mental faculties; 9, refines the mind and raises it above the average; §

quickens the wit and stimulates the mental ability.

This lunar position gives much concern with respect to the affairs of relatives, also gives much travel, love of change and a tendency to take many journeys.

It is an unfavourable position for the mind when the Moon is afflicted, especially by Mars or Saturn.

The sign occupying the cusp, or generally ruling the third house when no plants are therein, has considerable influence over what is known as the lower brain mind, that part of the universal mind which is imprisoned in the brain, and therefore the state of this lower brain mind when each sign of the zodiac occupies the cusp of the third house will now be considered.

Obstinate, determined, receptive, jealous, acquisitive and sensuous.

Intelligent, fond of detail, refined, methodical but discontinuous.

Indolent, peevish, impressionable, fanciful, negative and very sensitive.

Ambitious, high-spirited, passionate, enterprising and fearless.

Subtle, laborious, selfish, keenly alive to own interest, fond of science.

Just, well-balanced, sincere, artistic, refined and fond of comparison.

Secretive, very subtle, curious, mystical, shrewd, proud, and suspicious.

Cultured, prophetic, impulsive, rebellious, religious, sympathetic.

Crafty, cunning, ambitious, jealous, subtle, penetrative, reflective,

Refined, artistic, concentrative, constant, faithful, scientific, intuitive.

Receptive, capable of understanding, but somewhat superficial or methodical in expression, and often dreamy and far too impressionable and mediumistic.

Cardinal Signs on the cusp of the third house, or if planets occupy cardinal signs in this house, the mind is ambitious, changeable, aspiring, and very enterprising.

Fixed Signs give the mind a fixed and determined attitude, persevering, plodding, persistent, proud, authoritative, and difficult to convince or impress.

Mutable Signs make the mind more impressionable, receptive, methodical, systematic, painstaking, and easily affected by surroundings.

The third house should not, however, be relied upon alone when giving a judgment of the mind and mental qualifications, for the luminaries and Mercury must also be carefully considered. Indeed, the whole horoscope may in a sense be said to represent the mind.
