impulse or feeling to be much more prominent than reason. The native will not escape scandal or ill-repute, whether deserved in the present life or not. If afflicted by Uranus, the native either becomes immoral or is carried away by impulse and commits some rash act. Afflicted by Saturn the native is vindictive, resentful, and unforgiving, or overcritical and sceptical. Afflicted by Jupiter, improvident and wasteful, or over-enthusiastic and self-deceptive. If well aspected the native is courageous and brave, but acts more from impulse and instinct than reason.

THe Sun in the tenth house denotes honour and success in life, a good moral heredity, and the favour of persons of power and position. It gives fortune and prosperity toward the middle portion of life; right means of livelihood, and the ability to become independent, prosperous, and successful in whatever business, profession, or occupation the native may follow. If much afflicted it denotes arrogance and pride and position held under protest or by right of birth more than by right of merit. If well aspected distinction, authority and permanent success in life. This position causes the native to occupy places of trust, important posts of honour or responsibility, which will be maintained or lost according to sign and aspect. It favours the vital temperament, governmental positions, and generally denotes good birth or favourable hereditary conditions.

Venus in the tenth house denotes success in life and high moral stamina. It favours artistic or musical pursuits and gives general prosperity, also the favour and good esteem of exalted persons. The native has merit and ability, is generally very well disposed and succeeds through possessing a pleasant and agreeable manner. If in trine or sextile aspect with Jupiter the native will have some social distinction, or good reputation with great financial success at some period of life. If afflicted, the influence of Venus is not materially affected but there is a lack of opportunity to express ability. The adverse aspects of the Moon are not favourable to Venus, and they affect this benefic planet more unfavourably than the aspects of the planets, but on the other hand the favourable aspects of the Moon to Venus are particularly good. This position favours marriage, money and friendships, also those occupations, arts or businesses where the needs of women are catered for, such as milliner, modiste, fancy confectioner, etc.

Mercury in the tenth house denotes success or failure according to

sign and aspects. It generally gives ability to successfully undertake commissions and agencies, or causes the native to adopt several professions and undertakings. If well aspected this position denotes tact and a clear mind with fertility of resource. If much afflicted, cunning and deception, with inclination to act dishonestly or indiscreetly, the moral standard being sacrificed for mental interests, while tact and diplomacy become deceit and craftiness, according to the sign Mercury occupies. Afflicted by Mars, without any good aspects to mitigate, untruthfulness and impulsive speech are denoted; afflicted by Saturn, without other mitigating influences, tendencies to commit forgery and embezzlement. Mercury has very little dignity in the M.C. unless very well aspected and in a good sign. It may give fluent speech and retentive memory. |

Tue Moon in the tenth house denotes fame and publicity, fluctuation and change in business, or occupation. Ephemeral success without permanent stability or assured position. If afflicted this will bring notoriety and scandal. If well aspected many advantageous and desirable changes. In cardinal signs it denotes great ambition anda very active life. In fixed signs more stability and perseverance, but less activity and change or progress. In mutable signs less fortune and more ability without adequate opportunity. If afflicted by Mars this position will bring scandal of a public nature or discredit which will injure the native’s future. If afflicted by Saturn, many difficulties and obstacles to overcome. If well aspected by Jupiter, much success and prosperity. Birth is generally poor or in an indifferent environment.

It is not necessary to fix the attention solely upon the tenth house to discover the business, profession or employment that the native will follow. In the present state of civilisation many persons follow professions for which they are not qualified or naturally fitted. In such cases. unless able to adapt themselves to their environment and take an interest in the occupation followed, it is likely to be undertaken either as a necessary but unwelcome means of livelihood or else from merely sordid motives. The planet or planets in the mid-heaven will, in the majority of cases, denote the trade, business or profession, but when none are found in this part of the nativity, the houses and the signs. containing the majority of the planets must be carefully considered.

The sixth house is especially related to a business or profession followed through pressure of necessity, or force of circumstances, rather than from choice or direct ambition.

Frery signs gives ingenuity and energy, and fits the native to study mechanics and to follow any trade or profession in which fire is a necessary element in the production of the goods handled, sold, or worked with.

Arry signs denote skill in some literary occupation, scientific pursuits or any profession wherein the mind and brain are more exercised than the body. It would make the native a lawyer, writer, mathematician, draughtsman, designer, artist, clerk, reporter, teacher, novelist, poet, etc.

Warery signs favour all employments in which liquid is used, from mineral waters to wines and spirits, or from washing clothes to sailing yachts. Also emotional acting, elocution, etc.

EarTHY signs give employment in connection with buildings, mining, and all laborious, heavy and slow work in which time, labour and perseverance are required. Virgo inclines to chemistry, Taurus to agriculture or finance, Capricorn to administrative or political positions,

CarpinaL signs denote ability to take up pioneer work, to engage in callings that are new, inventive, and of a public nature. It fits the native to undertake new enterprises, and also to adopt those professions that require speed, ingenuity, quick wit, tact and diplomacy. It also denotes that the native will be aspiring and ambitious, never resting until he is his own master or at the head of whatever pursuit he follows.

Frxep signs give the native ability to plod and work industriously, and to succeed best where he can exercise patience, endurance and quiet determination. It favours employment under government, civil service, ancient institutions, old-established businesses, and professions that are stable and conventional. It inclines to the medical profession, or the navy.

Moras_e signs fit the native to become a better servant than master ; an agent, messenger, clerk, traveller, teacher, editor, speaker: but unless the nativity shows exceptional success he would do best in the employ of others. It sometimes denotes occupations in which uniform is worn, or work in institutions and public companies or where public commodities are dealt with.

The task of deciding which planet, house, or sign will best signify the occupation is not an easy one. As has been pointed out, not only do many people, perhaps most, follow pursuits they find more or less distasteful, but some change their occupation more than once, and others carry on two or more lines of activity at the same time, such as business and politics, or business and preaching. If many plancts are in one sign, things signified by that house and sign are sure to be forced forward, but whether they will be fortunate or otherwise depends upon the nature of the combination, 7.e., whether it is more benefic or malefic.

As a general rule people like occupations at which they succeed, and dislike those at which they fail, and whether they will do the one or the other depends upon whether or no benefic planets and aspects predominate in any given combination. If there are not several planets in one sign, it is as well to count those in the groups of signs, cardinal, fixed, mutable, etc., as just given. It must be remembered, however, that a smaller number of planets in an angular sign (especially first or tenth) may outweigh a larger number in a sign not angular. The strongest planet in the map should be carefully considered, also that which is closest to the Sun or in closest aspect to the Sun; attention being paid to whether such planet is angular, whether it has dignity in tenth, or second, whether it is strong by sign and fortunate by aspect, and whether it is elevated or not. The consideration of signs and groups of signs usually gives a better indication than the planets alone, because these may change their nature according to sign.
