Tue Moon rising influences the temperament, making it more pronounced and having the stamp of heredity more clearly defined. It affects the functional arrangemenis according to the sign it occupies. it never fails to make the native ambitious or fond of fame and public recognition and gives a desire for change, a love of novelty, and much

curiosity. The native has a very receptive and clear mind, according to the nature of the aspects which the Moon applies to from the ascendant. It lifts the native upward in life, and brings many benefits and advantages either from the public or through the social world, into which the native’s domestic interests largely enter. It denotes great activity and a very eventful or changeful life.

Touchy ; aspiring ; impulsive ; penetrative ; mental. Earnest ; sympathetic ; peaceful; intuitive ; vital. Mysterious ; secretive ; ingenious; fond of intrigue ; motive. Persuasive ; sensitive ; sociable ; capable ; attractive. Enthusiastic ; persevering ; dignified ; intuitive and orderly. Reasonable ; expressive ; analytical ; psychic; quiet. Accomplished ; courteous ; perceptive ; mirthful and kind. Martial ; selfish ; jealous; proud; revengeful.

Energetic ; passionate ; aspiring; kind and generous. Notorious ; anxious for fame ; covetous ; cautious; selfish. Tolerant ; inoffensive ; imaginative ; active; inventive. Sympathetic ; dreamy ; inconstant ; quiet and hospitable.

As regards personal appearance the student is often in great difficulty to make up his mind as to the type of body represented by any map he may be studying. Experience will be his only true teacher, and only hints and suggestions can be given. The descriptions which follow are intended merely to form a nucleus from which the student’s own powers of observation and inference may develop a fund of ideas and conceptions which will serve as a basis for judgment of this question when at any time a horoscope may come before his notice.

In studying these descriptions, which are adapted and amplified from a very complete list given in a series of ‘lessons’ which came into the author’s possession many years ago, it must be remembered that not every one of them is founded upon the direct observation of the writer. No observer is likely to be personally acquainted with 108 different people, each born with a different planet rising in a different sign, and therefore it is clear that a considerable amount of judicious inference, added to comprehensive observation, must have gone to the compiling of this list. But that need be no impediment to its usefulness or discredit to its accuracy ; for, as his powers of observation grow and his experience widens, the student will find growing up in is own mind conceptions,

more or less definite, but still unmistakable, of the appearanre conferred by various planets in the different signs, and he will be sooner or later in a position to formulate his ideas in some similar manner. And the fact that he can do this, even in ever so small a degree, will give him confidence in accepting tentatively the descriptions now to be set down.

It may be said that in the main the Ascendant or Rising Sign furnishes the matrix of the whole bodily appearance; this is very considerably modified, however, by the sign occupied by the ruling planet. As an instance may be taken the late Queen Victoria, who though born with Sun and Moon both rising in Gemini, and Mercury in Taurus, displayed a markedly 7aurean appearance, the influence of this sign becoming increasingly marked as years went on. ‘The general bodily type associated with each of the Twelve Signs has been given already and need not be repeated.

In addition to the Rising Sign and the sign occupied by the ruling planet, the Sun and Moon also greatly influence the appearance, through the signs which they respectively occupy. In men the influence of the Sun is more to the front, as a rule, and in women the Moon; but both have their effect and may be discerned by a little attention, even when not obvious at a first glance. Where Leo rises, the appearance inclines more to that of the sign occupied by the Sun, and the influence of the Moon is less marked. Where Cancer rises, on the other hand, the influence of the sign occupied by the Moon is usually paramount, not infrequently obscuring to a considerable extent the sign occupied by the Sun; indeed, even the typical ‘Cancer’ appearance is often hardly to be traced, so strong is the influence of the Moon’s sign."

Where two or more planets are found in the ascendant the descriptions of each should be taken and the results blended. It must be remembered that a strong aspect from some other planet will greatly modify the influence, coarsening or refining according to the inherent nature (a) of the aspecting planet and (4) of the sign in which it is placed.

* By ‘typical’ Cancer appearance is meant the contour and expression to be noted in those who have the Moon in Cancer at birth, whether in the ascendant or not : see description of Moon rising in Cancer on p. 117.

Note.—It is not always that a planet is found rising in the ascendant but the descriptions that now follow can be used as well for the Ruling Planet and the sign it occupies, as for a planet rising in the sign; bearing in mind, of course, that the Rising Sign itself determines the actual type of body—whether tall, sturdy, thick-set, fragile, bony, muscular, etc --the ruler’s sign merely modifying this in a secondary way, much as negro blood ‘peeps out’ in a mulatto or quadroon. It is in the blending of these influences that the student will develop that artistic faculty which is so essential to his progress. He should note the difference produced by the several planets in any sign, and see how each modifies the inherent nature of the sign in a way that is peculiar to itself.

ttt The influence of this planet when rising in this sign modifiesthe *# general type but little, save that it detracts considerably from the great positiveness of appearance and manner which Aries usually shows, giving a more dreamy or introspective look to the eyes; sometimes the latter are very indrawn in expression. ‘The body is somewhat slighter in build, and the complexion very delicate and the skin sometimes semi-transparent. Much depends on the position of Mars in this case. Low types are unscrupulous, ready in resource, liars, ready to do anything for notoriety.

Hi A child born under the influence thus produced becomes a tall, HI thin, but well-made person, with a somewhat ruddy complexion. Disposition inventive, inquisitive, and fond of science. [Extremely positive mind, not easily overcome. Conjugality slight, and prone to become selfish. A masterful person and a born leader of thought in whatever sphere he may move. Something of a revolutionist, and ever a champion of individual freedom.

hk =Medium height, with a not very handsome complexion, high fore- h head, full dark eyes, and very little beard. A wonderfully clever person according to his own estimation, and one whom it is not wise to offend; one who will make himself a leader in some way, being exceedingly ambitious. Much depends upon the positions of the Sun and Mars, as to whether the ambition is of a noble type or otherwise; if the Sun also rises in Aries, the disposition is much improved.
