The trine or sextile aspect is a decidedly favourable influence and usually bestows some of the charm alluded to, though it is doubtful whether such strong characters are found, asa rule, with this as with the other positions just given. The favourable aspect of the Sun to Neptune is a good ‘stand-by,’ denoting a general ‘good fortune’ in the wider sense, almost equivalent to that of the trine of Jupiter.

The nature of Neptune is imperfectly understood at present, but a

fuller account of its influence is given in a later work of this series.

The conjunction of the Sun with Uranus gives a powerful magnetism, but it is often more evil than good and there are very few born with this conjunction who do not spoil their lives either by oversensitiveness, impulse, eccentricity, and wilfulness, or by coming into contact with those who lead them into difficulties.

If the horoscope shows the power to appreciate this conjunction, it denotes the inventive faculty, love of reform, and the ability to live without being bound by convention or arbitrary restrictions, thus bringing success in exceptional and unique ways.

The square is evil, and denotes great troubles, over which the native has no control whatever.

The opposition brings great troubles in married life, separations, divorce, intrigue, illicit connections, and sad and uncommon experiences generally.

The trine aspect is very good and rarely fails to bring the native a successful career through his ingenuity and inventiveness.

The conjunction of the Sun with the planet Saturn brings responsibility into the life, but it is only when they are in a congenial sign that it is really fortunate. A great deal depends upon the actual power of Saturn in the nativity, for if Saturn absorbs the life from the Sun, and dons its golden garment, then expect much diplomacy, with quiet and persistent purpose, in which feeling has no part, but a powerful determination is gradually and progressively manifested. A conjunction of the Sun and Saturn in common signs is not good; in the fixed signs it denotes subtle pride or much dignity and a keen sense of honour and justice ; in the cardinal signs intellectual pride and dignity, and a somewhat cold and unsympathetic nature, not from lack of feeling but more often from want of breadth of thought. In weak characters the native is very selfish or much bound by ignorance. In strong characters there is large tact, and a great deal of consideration for others which comes from knowledge and experience.

The opposition of the Sun and Saturn is very evil, causing many obstacles, disappointments and failures in life, and denotes a retardation of progress through separations, deaths, and loss of credit. Ifin mutual reception the evil is much lessened (Lord Salisbury ; the German Kaiser William II).

The square aspect of the Sun and Saturn brings domestic affliction, limitations to progress through the conditions of the home life, parents and family, and through various difficulties over which the native can have no control.

The trine aspect, or even sextile, of Sun and Saturn will steady the whole nature, so that good progress may be made. It brings responsibility that is not difficult to discharge, and causes the native to make that steady progress upward which may be slow but is yet sure.

The conjunction of the Sun with the planet JupiTeR gives success through hope, the advent of a teacher or helper, the favour of some powerful person, new social advantages, or exceptional opportunities. Increase of good name and fortune through philosophy, religion, or travel

The square or opposition of the Sun and Jupiter is not altogether unfortunate, but it retards progress, and gives rather indirect than obvious success. It will bring some losses, but often gain follows the loss, in exemplification of the proverb that it is an ill wind indeed that blows vo good. ‘The signs from which these aspects operate will have much to do with the effect.

The trine aspect of the Sun to Jupiter is the best possible influence and assures a fortunate and successful career, acting in a more material sense than the conjunction, with all that the conjunction indicates in addition.

The conjunction of the Sun with the planet Mars gives great force of character, and a hasty and fiery temper, though not lasting; love of enterprise, fits of ambition without sufficient stability to continue ambitions long enough to make final success assured. Forceful and often rash and over-venturesome.

The opposition of the Sun to the planet Mars will bring separations, deaths, litigation, opponents that are powerful, and a career that is full ofextremes. It is against any permanent success, for sudden and serious obstacles come into the life to mar its progress.

The square brings domestic worries, and a liability to violent changes, feverish attacks and many troubles.

The trine aspect gives success through enterprise, speculation, industry, courage, and adventure.

The Sun approaching the conjunction of VENus gives love of pleasure; generosity ; warm feelings or strong passions; a very fruitful and successful career through life, with many domestic and social

advantages. Ifthe Sun is separating from Venus, fewer social desires and a more temperate passional nature, with less liability to indulge the latter.

When the Sun is in conjunction with Mercury, or Mercury is in advance of the Sun, there are shown adaptability, fertility of resource and the power to fit into the environment or to rise above it as required ; but in this case the Sun and Mercury must be in a sign congenial to the nature of both, and not afflicted. If the Sun had just left the trine aspect of a planet before it came to the conjunction of Mercury, give first attention to the trine (or even in a square opposition) in preference to the conjunction. If the Sun is in 15° and Mercury 20° of asign, for instance, and Uranus in 10° of a sign forming a *, LJ or A thereto, count the aspect to Uranus as most important, although separating by 5°. The reason for this is obvious; Mercury is convertible, and therefore not so strong as Uranus to affect the Sun. Ifthe Sun is in advance

of Mercury there is less concentration and more pliability and changeableness.

The conjunction of the Sun with amy planet accentuates the individual character, the planet colouring the Sun, so to speak, and the Sun adding life and activity to the planet, making its influence very pronounced.

The square aspect brings domestic limitations which may be traced to inherited fate. The character is often altered and modified by this aspect. Persons bound by parentage, customs, habit or family ties will have a square aspect denoting the bondage.

The trine brings success into the life through the contented frame of mind which the harmony of this influence denotes. It is the aspect that fits in with the ordinary idea of ‘luck,’ for it corresponds to prosperity that comes without effort.

The opposition is a separative or more properly a dalcncing aspect, which often shatters the prospects by causing sudden and often unlooked for changes, separations, and disappointments.

It will thus be seen that to a great extent character is destiny.

The semisquare and sesquiquadrate are disintegrative and weakening in their effects, causing friction and waste of power, like sand in the bearings of a machine.

We may now proceed to a consideration of the ruling planet in regard to its position in the zodiac; first, when free from affliction by

aspect, secondly, when afflicted, either by conjunction or bad aspect with the malefics, or by the unfavourable aspect of the Sun or other

Ruler in the Signs, and well aspected or unafflicted

Thoughtful ; discriminative ; industrious; retiring ; refined. Harmonious ; intuitive ; contemplative ; imaginative. Proud ; jealous ; stubborn ; acquisitive ; sympathetic. Charitable ; ambitious ; dignified ; self-reliant ; prophetic. Persevering ; practical ; calculating ; reasonable ; religious. Sympathetic ; sincere; faithful; honest ; intelligent. Methodical ; receptive ; philanthropic ; modest ; logical.
