2 ¥S. Ambitious love nature; restricted affections; careful of honour. Liable to treachery through associates; friendly with strange characters, and those who have doubtful reputations. Capable of obtaining fame and distinction through skilful use of affections; gain through diplomatic alliances. Gain through foreign travel. Legacies from relatives. Marriage is often one of convenience or for social standing; there are disappointments in love, and coldness or indifference of partner, intrigues with inferiors and unhealthy attachments; little or no domestic happiness. Mental affliction through secret attractions, Allowances from abroad. The inner desire is for Excellence.

2 <s. Faithful in affection; platonic unions; romantic and secret attachments. Power to win friends easily, and to form easy acquaintance with strangers. Gain through social affairs and through acquaintances. Philosophical views of love life; reserved in opinions and sincere in religious convictions. Money by inheritance or through public connections. Marriage for pure love; very refined inclinations. Friends amongst inferiors. A happy love attachment, and the probability of a long courtship. Some tragedy or shock at close of life, or change of consciousness of some kind. Fond of mental companionship. Gain indirectly through enemies. The inner desire is for Soul Communion.

? . Hospitable, sympathetic and easily impressed, philanthropic, or engaged in work connected with institutions; strongly attached to persons weak or afflicted. Gain through friendships: honour amongst relatives. Travel for business purposes. Inspirational or psychic, a true dreamer or medium. Gain from attachments, financially. Discrimination in love affairs; sickness after marriage and liability of affection to one not worthy of support. Gain through the help of friends. A peaceful mind; intuition in business affairs. A good end but somewhat involved. The inner desire is for Compassion.

2 and ©. Inconjunction, the native is a very warm-hearted lover and a general favourite with the opposite sex; he or she probably falls in love ‘at first sight,’ and usually the marriage is one of affection. Such people seldom remain single; they seem almost invariably to marry, no matter how bad the afflictions may be in other parts of the horoscope. ‘The nativeis fond of society and friends, and is kind-hearted and sympathetic, but may be too much attached to ease, luxury and comfort. This position is favourable for parents’ money, for money derived from parents, and for money earned through business, profession or public occupation. It gives some liking for poetry, music and the fine arts generally, and some ability in this direction. The native is likely to rise in his occupation and to do well by it. He is popular and has many friends; may marry money, though not necessarily for money. The semi-square is not very important, but it will co-operate with any

other aspect in causing delay or misfortune in all matters mentioned above. (The 6 Vand Z are of course the only possible aspects.)

2 and ¥%. In good aspect or conjunction, this is fortunate for money, property and possessions; and these (to put it briefly) may be obtained through any of the activities of the third or sixth houses. In a secondary degree money may be obtained through pleasure, luxury, the theatre, singing, and through sources of the fifth house generally. It is fortunate for marriage and partnership, which may be with one coming to some extent under the third or sixth house in character or occupation, or to a slighter extent under the ninth or twelfth; and the native may marry twice or have two attachments. It gives fondness for society, an amiable and good-humoured manner, and general popularity, especially with the opposite sex. It is fortunate for all matters of the third house; goodwill between brethren; money earned by the wits, by speaking or writing ; it is good for invention, and gives manual dexterity which may be turned to account in any of the arts, drawing, painting, music, sculpture, etc.

It is favourable for intuition and the inspiration of genius, and gives some talent for music, poetry, or kindred pursuits. It gives good brains, wit, mirth, buoyancy, good temper, hopefulness. It is good for all matters of the sixth house; for food, digestion, health; for benefit from doctors or medical affairs, and money therefrom; for good relations with servants and subordinates, also when the native occupies such a position himself; for goodwill between relations (uncles, aunts, cousins, etc.). The native is inclined to marry a cousin or some relation.

The only bad aspect between Mercury and Venus is the semi-square, and this is not important. It may, however, put obstacles in the way of any of the affairs signified by the four signs ruled by the two planets ; money, marriage, partnership, writings, brothers, journeys, servants, health, etc., and will reverse or hinder those activities previously referred to under the good aspects.

Inconjunction or good aspect, it is very favourable for all matters signified by the second, fourth, and seventh houses; for money and possessions ; for money through a parent or parents (probably from mother); for money through things of the third and eleventh houses; for money through houses, land and fruits of the earth. It is fortunate for friends, partners and marriage, and gives social and general popularity. The occupation will be profitable and yet at the same time

either unrefined or of low class or caste, plebeian, or involving secrecy. The partner (business or marriage) will differ in age or social position from the native, but help or approval comes from parents (especially mother).

In bad aspect, it brings trouble and loss through money, possessions and property ; itis bad for parents’ money (especially mother), and for any attempt to earn money through the eleventh, third or fourth houses; money may be lost through such matters. The native may suffer in reputation or pocket through some unpopularity, through some slur being cast upon him, or his business or pursuits; or through slander or scandal, whether deserved or not; or through attaching himself to unpopular movements or causes. It brings trouble through partnership, love and marriage; and the trouble may arise from any of the causes just referred to—social or general unpopularity, disapproval of parents, difference in age or position, or from something arising out of the occupation.

THE INFLUENCE OF MERCURY IN THE TWELVE SIGNS

& 7. A quick, active, impulsive and argumentative mind; given to over-estimate or exaggerate, and in making statements to add an unconscious ‘colouring’; given also to a change of opinions. It inclines to hasty speech, and rash projects; but it gives clever and inventive methods of thought, with liberal views and expressive characteristics.

8 &. A practical, solid, firm and determined mind, somewhat obstinate and stubborn and inclining to dogmatism ‘or over-fixity of opinion. It denotes decided fancies, and strong likes and dislikes, with, however, much intuition; and it moreover bestows the gift of discreet silence or very diplomatic speech. The mind is generally cheerful, refined and musical.
