Chapter XVI. The Ninth House—Philosophy AND TRAVEL

Tue ninth house is the house of philosophy, the higher mind, and hence of all that concerns the scientific and religious attitude of the native. It is the house of the subjective and abstract mind as opposed to the objective and concrete brain mind, represented by the third house. The third house, representing the smaller and slower mind which has its range in the physical world only, also represents short journeys and travelling by land; while the ninth house, signifying the wider and less limited mind, also represents transit that is rapid, long journeys, sea voyages, foreign travel, etc. ‘The third house governs eaucation ana studies of the minor and more conventional order, the ninth house philosophy and deep thinking. The third is the house of perception and learning, the ninth the house of reason and intuition. The ninth house has some connection with legal matters, probably owing to its being governed by Jupiter in the natural order of the signs. It may also be taken to represent relatives of the marriage partner, and many conditions which lie entirely outside of the native’s immediate environment.

- The ninth is a house that represents the future more than the past (fifth) or present (first), and in this respect it governs dreams, visions, prophecy, imagination and thought, also intuition and pure reason; these faculties are expressed in accordance with the development of the native, and also according to the planet occupying the house, this being, as In the case of all houses above the earth, more important than the ruler of the house itself.

Neprune in the ninth house denotes very peculiar and generally psychic persons whose minds are absorbed in phenomena and strange theories. It is not a good position unless free from affliction; alone in this house or badly aspected it is likely to cause the native much trouble

—if not in waking consciousness then in dreams or through fancies. Panes)

It gives a weird and uncanny tendency to the mind, which is impressionable, easily influenced and liable to be quickly psychologised. This position appears to act beneficially only when all the other evils in a nativity are exhausted and then froma psychic more than a material standpoint.

Uranus in the ninth house depends entirely upon the composite horoscope, 7.¢., the horoscope as a whole. In some nativities it will denote inventive genius or intense love of metaphysical studies, and a keen delight in all occult subjects; in other nativities it will give an aversion to all that relates to metaphysics. There can be no worse position for Uranus when in opposition, square or conjunction with the planet Mars. If the luminaries afflict it will give a very eccentric and peculiar mind, much trouble through travel, law and occult arts. In the very advanced it denotes a highly original and progressive mind; in the undeveloped it denotes a ‘crank’ who does more harm than good with his absurd notions.

SATURN in the ninth house denotes a studious and meditative mental attitude towards all higher thought pursuits. It favours the scientific and philosophical more than the religious mind and often causes the native to investigate astrology, metaphysics, and psychic studies generally. In the unawakened it denotes some stupidity with regard to higher thought questions and tends to produce self-deception, and a very crafty and subtle mentality. If afflicted by Mars or Uranus it tends to produce madness, or grave mental affliction. This is not a good position for voyages, travels or foreign affairs. If Saturn is in good aspect with the Sun from this house it denotes the true religious spirit and makes the native faithful to whatever causes he espouses.

JUPITER in the ninth house is the ideal position for the philosopher or saint, unless afflicted, when religious fervour and devotion will take the place of philosophy of the metaphysical order. If afflicted: by Mars, a tendency to go to extremes in religious matters, also legal troubles and danger of shipwreck or accidents abroad ; by Saturn, selfdeception and trouble through overstepping the bounds of reason. If in good aspect to the Sun, Moon or Mercury this is a splendid position for the higher mind, giving true intuition, and the ability to forsee clearly. This position brings true dreams and a very peaceful state. It is favourable for travel and residence abroad, also for clerical, legal, philanthropic

Mars in the ninth house denotes an over-enthusiastic nature with regard to religious and philosophical subjects, and tends to destroy reason or to allow impulse and desire to overrule the mind. If much afflicted it gives fanatical, irregular, bigoted or sceptical opinions on religious matters; if well aspected a zealous and enterprising mind. This is not a good position unless the native is shown to exercise selfcontrol, when it will probably destroy any preconceived or orthodox beliefs, and give liberty and freedom of thought, which will be far from conventional or stereotyped. Much will depend upon the sign Mars occupies. In the fiery signs there will be rebellious tendencies and over-much impulse. In the earthy signs the position is better than in the watery signs, but when in the airy signs there will be grave tendency to overstep the boundary of reason. This position gives some danger from voyages, travels, litigation, etc.

Tue Sun in the ninth house denotes a very austere mind, firm and self-reliant, inclined to investigate scientific subjects with an unbiassed and clear judgment. It gives success in matters connected with the church and the law, and those in which the mind is engaged in higher problems dealing with the masses rather than the few. This position promises success abroad, or residence in foreign countries, also through travel and social intercourse. The more cosmopolitan the native, the greater will be the advantages arising out of this position; if orthodox or conventional, the position shows some tendency to become bigoted in religious belief, also to become proud and over confident. May rise to some position of responsibility in matters signified by the ninth house. If afflicted: by Mars or Uranus, fanatical or extreme enthusiasm in religious faith, legal difficulties and trouble in foreign countries; by Jupiter, hypocritical tendencies and poor success in religious affairs ; by Saturn, an over-bearing and hard mind, too imperious and full of false pride, which warps and hinders the progress of the native, the social benefits promised by the Sun in this house being considerably limited. If well aspected: by Mars, patriotism, courageous defence of right, and a great deal of righteous indignation when moved to expression; by Jupiter, sincere and true ideas concerning religion and a very philosophical spirit; by Saturn, a strong love of justice with a steady mind and power to undertake much responsibility.

VeENus in the ninth house denotes a very refined and artistic mind, loving every form of mental improvement and giving a very keen appre-

ciation of all that pertains to mental culture. This position will improve every horoscope, for it denotes a kind and sympathetic disposition and real ability to help and assist others. It gives the native a love of music, art, high-class literature and social intercourse with intellectual persons. It denotes success abroad, gain through travel, also through shipping, yachting, boating, etc., and pleasure through these, coupled with a very contented disposition. If afflicted it denotes disappointment in connection with ideals, and creates an internal longing for the unattainable ; but very little harm will come to the native who has this position at birth.

Mercury in the ninth house denotes a love of knowledge, an enquiring and studious mind. Unless well aspected this position is not altogether favourable, but if the horoscope indicates power to concentrate, the position is improved. If afflicted it denotes a tendency to worry, and to become engaged in too many things ai one time, also to wander and take aimless journeys. It causes the native to entertain many contradictory opinions and to waver and become far too indecisive for his own good. If well aspected it gives literary ability, and a keen appreciation of art, science, and all things which help to improve the mind. If unaspected it is not likely to affect the native to any marked degree, but in this case much will depend upon the sign it is in.
