本宫的对座(detriment) —— 星在此则失其所据。
「A planet has power in its own house, and in certain houses has a stronger influence for good or ill, also a weaker influence in other signs. The ‘detriment’ of a planet is the sign opposite to its own ‘house’; its ‘fall’ is the opposite degree to its ‘exaltation.’」

It was a detriment to the world when Religion shackled Science. Ignorance and Superstition caused untold woe, nevertheless man cherished a lofty spiritual ideal then ; he hoped for a higher and better life. It is infinitely more disastrous that Science is killing Religion, for now even Hope, the only gift of the gods left in Pandora's box, may vanish before Materialism and Agnosticism.Such a state cannot continue. Reaction must set in. If it does not, anarchy will rend the cosmos. To avert a calamity Religion, Science and Art must reunite in a higher expression of the Good, the True and the Beautiful than obtained before the separation.A spiritual religion, however, cannot blend with a materialistic science any more than oil can mix with water. Therefore steps were taken to spiritualize Science and make Religion scientific. In the thirteenth century a high spiritual teacherrhaving the symbolical name, Christian Rosenkreuz — Christian : Rose : Cross — appeared in Europe to commence that work. He founded the mysterious Order of Rosicrucians with the object of throwing occult light upon the misunderstood Christian religion and to explain the mystery of life and being from the scientific standpoint in harmony with religion.
A planet has power in its own house, and in certain houses has a stronger influence for good or ill, also a weaker influence in other signs. The ‘detriment’ of a planet is the sign opposite to its own ‘house’; its ‘fall’ is the opposite degree to its ‘exaltation.’In the column which is headed ‘exalted’ the number of degrees shown indicates the particular degree at which the planet receives exaltation. The true sense of the term ‘exaltation’ cannot at present be explained, but there can be no question that planets in their exaltation signs do exert a more refined and a more powerful influence than elsewhere. As for the exaltation degrees, they have been handed down by tradition, and since whenever such tradition has been traced back to its source, it is discovered to be founded upon a truth in nature, we shall do well to accept these degrees with respect, and endeavour if we can to penetrate the reason the ancients had in so fixing them. Thus, the exaltation degree of the Sun Y 19° is very close to, and perhaps identical with, the commencement of the Zodiac of the Consteilations. The planets are the vitalising centres in each nativity, therefore it is necessary to know the special influence of each planet and the nature of their vibrations in each sign and house. When we speak of a planet’s influence, it is the vibration coming from the spirit and life of the planet with which we are concerned, and not the physical medium through which it is acting, the physical planet being useful only as a means by which we may locate its position for astrological purposes. The special influence coming through each planet has been described by ancient astrologers who were evidently taught by those who knew, for as we have just hinted, modern students have found by study and practice that in the main, all that has been stated by their predecessors is true, with regard to the nature of each planet. A few students, looking more deeply into the esoteric side of the study, have discovered that there are higher vibrations than those generally attributed to the influence of the planets, but the failure of those coming under any particular planet to respond to these higher vibrations has caused this side of the study to be neglected. It seems incredible to those who study Astrology in the light of philosophy that any one should be found capable of believing that planetary influence emanates from the visible physical heavenly bodies only, or that a materialistic explanation could ever be fully explanatoryof the multitudes of facts recorded in the experience of every astrologer. That there is a physical influence there is no need to deny, although we must also remember that no scientific explanation of it is yet forthcoming.’ But in Astrology we have to step beyond the threshold of the physical universe and recognise the reality of that indwelling spiritual life and consciousness of which visible phenomena are merely outward manifestations, whether in the planet or the atom. We must study the subject from the philosophical and religious standpoint, and to do this with any degree of satisfaction the whole subject must be approached with a feeling of reverence and a true sense of humility.THE Sun, we are taught by those who are seeking the Path of Wisdom, is the body of God, the Logos of this solar system, through which He gives His Love, Light and Life.

In the foregoing diagram, the sign Yf ascending, is the sign given to the querent or enquirer, and as I2 rules that sign, he is under the influence of that planet at the time he proposes the question. In a general way the lord of the ascendant being retrograde in s, the sign of his detriment in the sixth house, denotes indisposition, sickness, and great anxiety respecting servants ; 1/ and $ denotes his pecuniary resources, as ruling the secondhouse ; 7/ , the former of these planets being in the ninth house free from any evil configuration, would denote a respectable person, and one whose resources were sufficient to meet his wants ; but £ , the latter significator, being in the eighth house opposite to the second, and disposed of by $ lady of the third house, who is found in the twelfth, portends anxiety and temporary vexation concerning the money, or well being of his kindred, with expenditure in short journeys, but gain in merchandise as 7/ ruler of the tenth house is found in the ninth, and bears rule in the house of wealth. — The J of the O and )) in the eleventh house denotes trouble and vexation by means of a public opponent, or a law-suit ; wherein, as these planets are each disposed of by 7/ the lord of the eleventh house, and he in the ninth, it promises a fair stout person from a great distance (and a religious generous person) will become an active friend ; while \ ruling the twelfth house, denotes his private enemies to be in his own power ; and 7/ ruling the second, indicates the means why, namely by means of his large pecuniary resources. — $ t lord of the fourth house in the tenth, separating from a sesquiquadrate ray of ^ and applying to his bi-quintile, indicates some transaction relating to the purchase of lands or houses, and a change of residence as naturally to be expected. £ in the twelfth house and ruling the eighth, denotes the death of a female relative as approaching, and by the measure of time already given, it may take place in about five months, accounting from the time for which the figure is calculated. (The same thing is shewn by the 83 in the third to those who believe in its efficacy.) In the accidental significations (see page 109) in the sixth house denotes the death of a friend ; and the planet l£[ in the ascendant foreshows many strange unexpected occurrences, rather vexatious, as about speedily to happen. — In particular questions —Were the query concerning money generally, it is favourable. Were it concerning the expected receipt of money, it is against it, as 7/ forms no aspects but the A of Tj ; and before he meets the A > ? interposes her g to and thereby prohibits the affair, or at least hinders it for a very long space of time. The g of J? and $ also denotes a cessation of friendship be-tween a near relation and the party enquiring, with evil intelligence by letters ; and spiteful neighbours. Were the query respecting the obtaining trade or profession, &c.$ angular, in semisextile to 1/ denotes money to be requisite in the affair, and by such means it might be obtained ; as ^ is in b*i-quintile to P? , and 1/ rules the eleventh house.
interests ; they then become rather materialistic, and tend to carry the practical too far into scepticism and doubt, while they expect from others what they are not willing to give ; they then seek to absorb all the good things in lifie for themselves, and may attain great worldly success, as they possess all the ability to enable them to attain their desired altitude. They may be said to have many faults when running to the personal side of their nature ; and ihey become very domineering, using their good intellectual abilities to the detriment of others, and a certain hardness takes possession of them, which causes them to identify themselves almost exclusively with the external world ; but when living more in their individuality, or becoming what is termed more self-conscious, they are really very splendid characters, becoming discriminative and wise, and often possessing the power to psychometrise and sense the psychic conditions from a higher standpoint. They are capable of making wonderful progress in spiritual development and usually seek to Uve the most chaste lives, becoming like their symbol, a virgin in purity. This sign acts to the maternal trinity in exactly the same way as Gemini acts to the intellectual, seeking to express in itself the union of Cancer and Leo.Those bom in this sign possess great recuperative powers. They are rarely sick or ill, and may attribute much, if not all, of their ill-health to their own habits of life; being natural students of the laws of hygiene, they know how to live properly. They should always avoid drugs of every kind, as, being very sensitive physically, they readily absorb the poisons of drugs into their system, which speedily affect their circulation. They are more sensitive to the vibrations around them than persons of other signs ; they feel the changes in atmospheric conditions almost directly they begin, and their bodies act like barometers, expressing to the sensitive soul within every change that takes place in their surroundings. Their best medicine for all disease is to be alone with Nature and to have around them harmonious conditions. They may do well to study diet and to be particular with regard to foods and the magnetisms surrounding them. The Virgo type may be summed up as retiring, ingenious, discriminative, active and mercurial ; they always seem to have their wits about them, and are generally self-possessed ; they seem, however, to be capable of extremes of good and so-called evil, being much smarter than the majority of those around them ;and when living only for themselves they are capable of outwitting others for the sake of personal gain, but they generally act with a full consciousness of what they are doing. This arises from their inventive genius, and being alive to all the advantages and disadvantages, they can so readily adapt themselves to the requirements of those around them that they make excellent entertainers and splendid social companions, and when they succeed in letting go the personal element they are really very beautiful characters.Persons born in this sign can readily adapt themselves to almost any environment, but they have their best success in life in the business world. All commercial affairs succeed under their ingenious management. They are good providers, and do remarkably well in all matters connected with food stuffs. They are natural chemists, therefore sutceed in all matters connected with chemistry. They have also a fondness for general literature, and have success in literary pursuits from author to printer. They make excellent agents, and in fact are quite ready to follow any avocation in which activity and general mental ability help them to succeed in life ; but their greatest success is to be found more in the business than the professional world. They like to handle solid materials, and to deal in merchandise allows their mental discrimination full scope for all its activities.
