THE twelfth house is generally supposed to be the house of sorrow, enemies, imprisonment and misfortune. This is probably owing to its being one of the houses belonging to the psychic trinity; and, as the cadent houses of that triangle, it is the least fortunate of the three. Before concluding our consideration of the twelve houses it will be as well if we analyse the value of the cardinal, succedent, and cadent houses. By doing so we shall obtain a clearer understanding as to why the twelfth house should be thought so very unfortunate. The Cardinal houses or ‘Angles’ represent the physical body, and all that is expressed by action in the outer or external world; they are quick, acute, active, energetic, open. They concern the head chiefly. The Succedent houses are less physical and material in their nature, being more in sympathy with the feelings and emotions. They govern principally the trunk of the body, and the heart is thus affected more than any other part. These succedent houses are not as plainly expressed in the outer or physical world as are the cardinal houses, but they are more closely related to the inner strength of the character. The Cadent houses are the least expressed of any signs; they govern the mind and thought more than emotion or action, and are more closely related to the /imbs of the body than the other signs.
The twelfth house by private assassinations, horses or great beasts, and frequently perpetual imprisonment. The sixth house by servants or neighbours. If S ke joined to Tj , the effect is still more certain ; but the peculiar nature of £ is to cause accidents, and a violent termination of existence by fire, iron, sharp weapons, gun-shot wounds, explosions, combustibles, stroke of horses, falls and active violence. If $ be in J □ or g to the @ and Hyleg, from fixed signs, it threatens the native with murder or suicide ; if $ be joined with him, or with the aspect, it will partly happen through women, and if be thus configurated, by thieves. If in mutilated signs, $ n\ ^ , or with Caput Algol, it threatens beheading ; if from the tenth or fourth house, or near Cepheus or Andromeda, it denotes hanging; if from the west angle, death by fire is threatened, but should it be in a quadrupedian sign, it will happen by falls or four footed beasts, and broken bones. If £ 1? and l£l are joined together in the evil conflux, the consequence will be more dreadful, and the death more terrible. The @ being Hyleg, and joined with the following stars , Caput Algol, Hercules, Bellatrix, Regulus, Antares, threatens a violent death and extreme sickness ; with the Pleiades, Castor, Pollux, Presepe, or the Asselli, by blows, stabs, shooting, beheading, or shipwreck; the bright star called the Eagle, and Fomahaut, are said to cause bites from animals or reptiles, as also the last star in Capricorn's back. Those who have the luminaries with those stars are generally fearful of being bitten by venemous reptiles. The Sun with the Pleiades frequently causes total blindness.
Of the two pairs of cadent houses the sixth is the house of voluntary service which we perform as our share of the world's work for an equivalent share in the world's wealth, and the twelfth house shows how we may be compelled to labor without remuneration under prison restraint if we do not work willingly. The sixth house shows also the state of our health and the twelfth tells if hospital treatment is necessary. The other pair of cadent houses, the third and ninth, show whether our life and work will confine us to one place or require travel and changes of residence. In this respect the third house shows short journeys and the ninth house long travels. The personal houses comprise the first, fifth andninth. The first house rules the constitution and peculiarities of the physical body. Planets and signs in that house put their stamp on it to make or mar according to the part of its self-generated destiny. Our fifth house shows the quality of the love-nature of the soul and the line of its expression if it follows the line of least resistance ; and the ninth house shows as much of the spirit as we can apprehend in our present limited stateThe material trinity of houses consists of the second, sixth and tenth and shows the worldly possessions of man, his means of obtaining them and the enjoyment they bring him. Wealth, or its reverse, is shown by the second house, health, without which there can be no joy in any worldly possession, is shown by the sixth house ; and the public prestige which is the chief source of gratification to the average human being, is shown by the tenth house.
- No degrees under the earth are, in any manner, eligible to the dominion now in question; except such only as enter into light actually above the succedent, or, in other ' words, with the ascendant. And any sign, although it may be above the earth, is still incompetent to partake in this dominion, if it be inconjunct with the ascendant: hence the sign which precedes the ascendant, and constitutes the twelfth house (called that ‘of the Evil Demon), is incompetent ; and not only for the above reason, but also because ' jt is cadent, and because the beams cast by the stars posited therein, towards.the earth, are impaired by the thick and dark exhalations arising from the earth’s vapours, which produce an unnatural colour and magnitude in the appearance of stars so posited, confusing, and in some measure annihilating, their beams. © °Thus far with regard to the places of prorogation, —The Number of Prorogators, and also the Part of Fortune. Arter due attention has been given to the instructions in the preceding chapter, the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant, and the part of Fortune, are to be considered as the four principally liable to be elected to the office of prorogator ; and their positions, together with those of such planets as rule in the places of their positions, are to be observed. The part of Fortune is ascertained by computing the number of degrees between the Sun and the Moon; and it is placed at an equal number of degrees distant from the ascendant, in the order of the signs. It is in all cases, both -by niglit and day, to be so computed and set down, that the Moon may hold with it the same relation as that which the Sun may hold with the ascendant ; and it thus becomes, as it were, a lunar horoscope or ascendant*,* The Latin translation, printed at Perugio in 1646, has here the ‘following passage in addition ; “ But it must be seen which luminaryAmong the candidates for prorogation, as beforementioned, by day the Sun is to be preferred, provided he be situated in a prorogatory place; and, if not, the Moon; but if the
